Bengali InScript Typing

Bengali InScript is a Unicode keyboard layout standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and mandated by the Government of India for all central government computer systems. It is part of the InScript family — a common phonetic key mapping used across all major Indian scripts.

In the InScript layout, vowels are placed on the left side of the keyboard and consonants on the right. The same key positions are used across all Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, etc.) — a Bengali InScript typist will find the positions familiar if they already know Devanagari InScript.

This typing page uses the Bengali InScript keyboard layout. The virtual keyboard on screen shows the InScript key mappings. When you press a key on your physical keyboard or click a key on the virtual keyboard, the corresponding Bengali character is inserted into the text area.

Key positions to remember:

• Vowel signs (মাত্রা) — Left side, unshifted
• Independent vowels (স্বরবর্ণ) — Left side, Shift
• Consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ) — Right side
• Hasanta (্) — D key (home row)

RRB (Railway Recruitment Boards): Railway posts requiring Bengali regional language typing for eastern India cadres use InScript as the standard layout.

WBPSC (West Bengal Public Service Commission): The InScript layout is accepted alongside Probhat for WBPSC typing skill tests.

Central PSUs & Ministries: All central government departments follow the BIS mandate — InScript is the required layout for Bengali typing on official systems.
